Serpents and Crushed Heads

Evil men with crushed heads:

Judges 4: 21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.

Judges 5: 24 “Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women.

“Most blessed among women” reminds us of Mary (Luke 1:42), The Church also crushes Satan’s head (Romans 16: 20). Mary becomes the Church in Revelation (compare chapter 12 with 21:2, 9-10). The Woman is the Holy City. Thus, Mary points onward to the Church, as do all the warrior women. They are types of the “Church militant.”

Judges 9:53 53 But a certain woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull.

Judges 16:23-31 – Samson crushes everyone at the house of Dagon. Dagon will later serve as a parallel to Goliath of Gath, and both of their heads will be attacked.

Serpents:

1 Sam. 11:1- Nahash– Snake

1 Sam 17- Goliath is the serpent. He wears “scale” armor 17:5.

David attacks his head 17:49, 51, 54

2 Kings 18:4 [Hezekiah] removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan.

Acts 9:18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

lepiß- scales BDAG lists Lev. 11:9, Dt. 14:9 – these passages from the Septuagint are the same that the Hebrew uses for Goliath’s armor and the other “scale” references. When Saul was persecuting the Church, he was acting as a Goliath Satan. God struck him blind in his head in order to convert him.

Jesus is the ultimate head crusher-

Golgotha- One Jewish tradition held that Adam’s skull had been passed along through Noah and the patriarchs, and it was eventually buried at this location. Origen mentioned this in his understanding.

Another tradition holds that Golgotha is a contraction for Goliath of Gath, and it is his skull that was buried here after David took his head back to Jerusalem. Jesus as the new David is crushing Goliath, who is typological of the great leviathan Satan.

Whatever the precise meaning of Golgotha, it is clearly a skull place, and Jesus’ cross impales the skull, crushing the forces of Satan for all eternity.
