Currently listening to:
Blood Mountain by Mastodon- A very impressive metal album. These dudes bring the thunder. Be sure to get “Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife” as well (though the ATHF soundtrack only has a few other worthwhile tracks). For a joke song, this could be one of my serious favorites.
Gods of the Earth by The Sword- Black Sabbath with better mixing.
[I should give a little side note here. Having played in an indie rock band and attended my share of hardcore, metalcore, grindcore, black, and death metal shows, I have to say that I have largely outgrown such silliness. Certain bands stick with me though, as they prove to be actually great musicians and songwriters, and I do find it interesting that metal as a genre has managed to become something of a true art form.]
The Juno Soundtrack- I’ve listened to this about a million and a half times. Really fun and nice music that is girl and/or parent friendly (for the most part).
In the Absence of Truth by Isis- A sort of classical/jazz metal.
Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus- A perennial favorite, this goes in the cd player whenever I’ve got “serious work” to do.
The Gourds Live at Bluebird Theater by The Gourds- If you don’t like these guys you just aren’t a true American.
East Nashville Skyline by Todd Snider- Really funny, but occasionally goes a little too far. Depends on your tolerance.
